Hi all,

Our Defects & Mineralogy team in Manufacturing Technology & Engineering is seeking a geologist to conduct PLM analyses on samples to determine liquidus temperatures.

Here are the specifics:
Job requisition number: 45964

Scope of Position:

  • You will apply your knowledge of glass and ceramics composition/properties, mineralogy and crystallography to effectively analyze, identify, and describe defects and testing results of production and experimental samples. Your passion and experience will serve all existing businesses. Projects will range from initial research through manufacturing. As part of the team, you will serve as one of a flexible base of resources and knowledge-holders which facilitates rapid solution development and emphasizes strong technical competence. The team of microscopy and mineralogy experts, will investigate process and product interactions in glass and ceramic research, development, and manufacturing.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Drive root cause understanding to improve yield, extend asset life, reduce costs, improve product attributes and enable new products.
  • Understand microscopic defects and material properties and their impact on Corning's products and processes.
  • Maintain high quality scientific principles, including the use of statistics, structured problem-solving methods and regimented analytical protocols
  • Hands-on sample preparation of defects in specimens
  • Optical microscopic data analysis for glass liquidus behavior
  • Employ analytical methods to identify defect and determine root cause, such as petrography, electron microscopy, 3D X-ray Tomography, X-ray Fluorescence, Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy, X-ray Diffraction and more.
  • Document all results in internal, structured reports.
  • Manage workload to ensure optimal turnaround and experimental efficiency.
  • Measure and communicate performance against objectives.

Travel Requirements:

  • Your travel will be up to 10% travel both domestic and international

Required Education:

  • At least B.S., preferred M.S. in Geology, or Glass, Materials or Ceramic Engineering

Required Skills:

  • Having hands on experience (petrographic microscopy, SEM, EDX, etc.) and knowledge of microscopic lab tools (microprobe, SIMS, ICPMS, FTIR, etc.)
  • Knowledge of mineralogy and petrography
  • Strong communication skills to enable collaboration with scientists and engineers
  • Desire to work hands-on in a lab environment
  • Problem solving skills
  • Ability to assimilate quickly and produce valuable results
  • Proven strong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish relationships with customers, suppliers, and co-workers

Desired Skills:

  • Glass, ceramics, process engineering basics
  • Statistical analysis
  • Strong multi-tasker
