Dear colleagues,
We invite you to submit an abstract to our session, V030
– State-of-the-Arc: Questions and Progress about the Subduction Zone
Factory, under the Volcanology, Geochemistry, and Petrology (VGP) section.
Please find the session details below. We believe that the theme and scope
of our session directly overlaps with the interests of this community.
Session Description:
The subduction of oceanic lithosphere into Earth’s interior is a
fundamental geodynamic process responsible for the formation of tertiary
crust on Earth, transport of surface materials into the deep interior and
vice versa, as well as some of the most catastrophic natural events,
including explosive volcanic eruptions, large-magnitude earthquakes and
associated tsunamis. Despite significant progress in research over the past
few decades, critical questions remain—including the mechanisms of
slab-to-mantle material transport and chemical geodynamics, the role of
fluid-rock interactions in slab seismicity, the controls on the
decoupling–coupling transition and thermal structure at the plate
interface, and the ultimate fate of subducting slabs and their volatile
cargo. This session aims to bring together expertise from petrology,
geochemistry, experimental laboratory studies, geophysics, and geodynamics,
to advance our understanding of subduction zone dynamics. Interdisciplinary
contributions are especially encouraged.
The deadline to submit abstracts is *Wednesday, July 30, 2025, at 23:59 EDT
(03:59 UTC). *
We look forward to seeing you at AGU 2025!
