Dear Colleagues,

Please consider submitting a paper for a special issue of Mineralogical Magazine in honor of Ed Grew at 80 - The Testimony of Minerals. This issue highlights Ed's remarkable career in the mineralogical and petrological sciences. A broad range of submissions are appropriate that touch on the varied aspects of Ed's research in mineralogy and petrology, in young rocks and old rocks, and in light elements and Earth's history.  The co-editors look forward to your submissions, prior to February 15, 2025. See below for more information. Please contact us should you have any questions.

Description:
Throughout his remarkable career, Ed Grew has deciphered and shared the deep-time stories locked in rocks and minerals. In works of meticulous scholarship and deep insight, Ed has revealed the rich context and varied processes of mineral formation in Precambrian complexes in Greenland, the Aldan shield, southern India and Antarctica, as well as younger metamorphic suites in Tajikistan and western Europe. He is the world’s authority on the minerals of lithium, beryllium, and boron, including pioneering studies on their mineral  evolution and ecology. His work on the classification of minerals in the garnet and sapphirine supergroups are classic contributions. In short, Ed Grew’s influence on the mineralogical community has been lasting and profound.

This special issue in Mineralogical Magazine is in honour of Ed Grew’s long and distinguished career and welcomes a wide range of contributions that touch on the varied aspects of his research, including (but not limited to) complex pegmatites, the geology and mineralogy of Antarctica, metamorphic minerals, the minerals of rare elements, mineral evolution, and varied aspects of petrologic mineralogy.

Guest Editors:
Gerhard Franz, Robert Martin, Jesse Walters, Barb Dutrow

Submission deadline is February 2025.

Dear Friends,

It is with a heavy heart that I have to inform you that Prof.
Hans-Ulrich Schmincke, a leader in the field of Volcanology, passed away
on Aug 24 after a brief illness. His remarkable career as a
volcanologist took off at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum, where he was a
Professor from 1969 - 1990. His accomplishments were many, and an
extended obituary published at the IAVCEI website
(https://www.iavceivolcano.org/ - please click to the newsletter)
attempts to summarize some highlights.

Personally, I came to know him very well only over the past few years in
the course of his work on the Eifel maars where he was passionately
re-thinking some of his own models from earlier in his career. It was a
privilege to benefit from his breadth of knowledge on volcanoes and
volcanic processes, and to see first hand his passion for the topic,
even when it involved trying to question some of the models that had
made him famous. The IAVCEI write-up discusses some of this. Hans-Ulrich
is not among us anymore, but his work continues - literally - as the
final research publication with him as an author undergoes revision. His
legacy will continue to enrich new generations of volcanologists for
years to come.

Regards,

Sumit

Very, very sad news, Sumit.

I have known Hans since 1992. We had a great time in Kiel, and my students continued working in his department for years.

He was a great person and scientist.

Regards
Alex
