Please consider contributing an abstract to the “Volcano-climate interactions” session at GSA Connects 2026 in Denver, CO, USA, Oct. 11–14.
Magmatic degassing and volcanic emissions can have short- and long-term climate impacts. The consequences of climate change (e.g., rapid deglaciation or changes in sea level) may impact volcanism by promoting generation of new magma via partial melting in tectonic settings with thin lithosphere, destabilizing existing magma bodies and influencing dike propagation, or modifying hydrothermal systems. The geographic (equatorial vs. polar), environmental (subaerial vs. submarine vs. subglacial), and tectonomagmatic (arc vs. hotspot vs. rift) context of a volcanic setting may further impact the mechanisms, scope and style of volcano-climate interactions. This session will offer an opportunity for multidisciplinary discussion of volcano-climate interactions in Earth's past, present, and future. We welcome submissions from multiple disciplines, including those based in physical volcanology, petrology, mineralogy, geophysics, seismology, and climate and atmospheric studies. Contributions from researchers at all career stages, including students, are encouraged.
Pablo Moreno-Yaeger (UW-Madison) will be the invited speaker.
