Tectonics and basin analysis postdoc position at the University of Iowa, USA

The Earth & Environmental Sciences Department at the University of Iowa invites applications for a postdoctoral research scholar position in tectonics and basin analysis. The postdoctoral scholar will work with Dr. Emily Finzelhttps://basinanalysis.lab.uiowa.edu/ to develop new on-site capabilities in heavy mineral analysis using a newly acquired FE-SEM with EDS, BSE, and CL capabilities and a new high-resolution mass spectrometer and laser system. The instruments will be housed at the University of Iowa Materials Analysis, Testing, and Fabrication (MATFabhttps://matfab.research.uiowa.edu/) Facility. The postdoctoral scholar will work closely with Dr. Finzel and MATFab technical staff to set up analytical routines to characterize bulk heavy mineral compositions in clastic rocks, as well as the major, trace, and rare earth element compositions of specific mineral species. Opportunities for teaching and field work are available. The successful applicant will be expected to spearhead collaborative research that leads to the publication of peer-reviewed articles, contribute to grant and proposal writing, and help train graduate and undergraduate students.

Position Details: The initial appointment is for one year, with renewal contingent on performance up to three years. It is housed within the Earth & Environmental Sciences Department at the University of Iowa in coordination with Dr. Emily Finzel. The annual salary starts at a rate of $56,484 and includes a benefits package. The anticipated start date is September 1, 2024.

Applicants should submit (1) a cover letter, (2) a curriculum vitae, (3) a 1-page research statement on how their research relates to the project, and (4) names and contact information of three references by the application deadline.

Education Requirement: Applicants must have completed the requirements for a PhD in a relevant scientific field prior to the start date.

Required Qualifications: Research interests that align with the lab and research project as described above; strong interpersonal and communication skills (including writing); ability to work independently and in a team environment; attention to detail.
