Hello mineral sciences community:

Every other year, MSA offers the Distinguished Public Service Award to
individuals “who have made important contributions to furthering the
vitality of the geological sciences, especially but not necessarily in the
fields of mineralogy, geochemistry, petrology, and crystallography
.”

There are many examples of possible significant contributions in the
context of “distinguished public service”, including activities related to
museums, geoscience education at any level, public outreach (including many
different types of science communication), and extraordinary service to
national or international organizations that foster greater public
understanding of minerals and the mineral sciences (broadly defined).

Nominees need not be “mineralogists” or members of MSA. Although the award
is typically given to individuals, nominations of organizations or groups
are also welcome, although only one award is given.

Please consider nominating a candidate for the 2027 Distinguished Public
Service Award.

Nominations consist of a cover sheet (downloaded from the MSA webpage for
the DPS Award https://msaweb.org/distinguished-public-service-medal/), a
2-page nomination statement explaining the nominee’s qualifications in
light of criteria for the award, 3 support letters (2 page maximum each),
and a CV for the nominee.

The nomination is submitted as a single compiled pdf document to MSA via
email to abenbow@minsocam.org on or before 1 June 2026.

More information about the award and the nomination process can be
found at this
website https://msaweb.org/distinguished-public-service-medal/:
