Dear colleagues,

The Geochemistry Division of the American Chemical Society is currently soliciting nominations for the 13th awarding of the Geochemistry Medal. The Geochemistry Division Medal is awarded biennially to an individual for outstanding accomplishment in any field of geochemistry.

Nominations should be sent to the Chair of the Geochemistry Medal Committee, Dr. Yuanzhi Tang, at yuanzhi.tang@eas.gatech.edu by 5 pm ET on April 30, 2024, and include the following:
•     A nomination letter (~2–5 pages in length) describing the nominee's qualifications.
•     The nominee’s current CV with an up-to-date publication list.
•     Two supporting letters from individuals other than the nominator.
•     Any other supporting information at the discretion of the nominator.
•     Nominators should confirm, prior to submission of the nomination, that the nominee is willing to be considered for the award.

The nominations will be evaluated based on the following categories, which should be highlighted in the nomination package:
•     Impact on subdiscipline(s), field(s), and society, such as seminal work, cited papers, foundation of new fields, etc.
•     Knowledge production, such as publications, citation index, books, patents, inventions, etc.
•     Interdisciplinarity and reach, such as the impacts across disciplines/fields and on other disciplines, etc.
•     Mentoring, such as the career trajectories, productivity of students and postdocs, and their placement in field, etc.
•     Leadership efforts and service, such as the impacts on learned societies and/or workplace (e.g., department, university, national labs), etc.
•     Contributions to inclusion, such as efforts in recruiting and retaining BIPOC, engagement in activities to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion.

As you scan your networks for worthy colleagues, we encourage you to actively consider representation (gender, and Black, Indigenous, and Persons of Colors, BIPOC) in the ensuing pool of candidates. Research tells us that women and BIPOC are often overlooked for awards and are more likely to think they are not ready to be nominated for prestigious awards.

The award consists of a bronze medallion plus $2000. The awardee will receive an allowance for travel to the award ceremony, as well as registration costs for the ACS meeting at which the award will be conferred. The Geochemistry Medal will be presented at the Spring 2025 ACS National Meeting & Exposition to be held in San Diego, CA in March 23–27, 2025.

Nominees are considered for two award cycles. Thus, new nominations, reviewed for the 2025 award and who are not successful, will be automatically reconsidered in the next award cycle (nominators will be contacted and invited to submit additional or updated information).

Previous GEOC medal winners include:
•     Frank J. Millero (2001)
•     John M. Hayes (2003)
•     Patrick G. Hatcher (2005)
•     Robert C. Aller (2007)
•     Fred T. MacKenzie (2009)
•     John A. Tossell (2011)
•     George W. Luther III (2013)
•     Donald Sparks (2015)
•     Susan L. Brantley (2017)
•     Everett L. Shock (2019)
•     Michael Hochella (2021)
•     Vicki Grassian (2023)

Thank you for your efforts in recognizing our colleagues’ contributions to the field of Geochemistry.

Yuanzhi Tang,

Geochemistry Medal Committee Chair
