Session T134 at GSA Connects 2023, Making Meaning from Geologic Observations: Data-Driven Interpretive and Analysis Methods in Geosciences

Hey all,

Please consider submitting an abstract to technical session *T134 *at the
GSA Connects 2023 meeting in Pittsburgh, Making Meaning from Geologic
Observations: Data-Driven Interpretive and Analysis Methods in Geosciences
.

We're quite excited about this session, which aims to bring together work
from across disciplines on quantitative analysis and interpretation of
geoscience datasets. Wanted to share this here as so many of the MSA list
members are doing work that would be great to have represented in this
session!

Session rationale: In a wide range of diverse geoscience fields, new
analytical and computational technologies have led to a rapidly
accelerating proliferation of data.  These datasets permit new quantitative
insights into Earth and planetary processes, but challenges remain for data
handling and statistical interpretation.  Key issues include the
development of appropriate and necessary cyberinfrastructure, growing a
geoinformatics community, assessing the significance of observations, the
relationship of data/observations to process, and how geologic signals can
be biased or degraded.

Several common themes are evident in data analysis across geoscience
fields, including: estimating uncertainty, understanding spatial and
temporal variation in datasets, determining the appropriate scale and
extent of observation, and assessing how representative datasets are of the
rock record.  Because of the overlap in goals and ongoing need for new
approaches, we aim to convene a session that highlights novel approaches
across the geosciences and seeds interdisciplinary communication useful to
advancing community data analysis, geoinformatics, and cyberinfrastructure.

*Invited Speakers: *Lucia Profeta (Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory), Daven
Quinn (University of Wisconsin Madison)

Conveners: Alex Tye (Utah Tech University) and Snir Attia (New Mexico
Bureau of Geology & Mineral Resources)

The GSA Connects 2023 meeting will be Oct. 15-18, 2023 in Pittsburgh, PA.
Abstract submission is currently open and the deadline for submission is
July 25, 2023. Please forward to anyone you think would be interested and
reach out to us if you have any questions.

For more information, see the meeting website:

this session:

We hope you will consider submitting to the session and look forward to
learning about all the great science that's being done out there!

Best regards,
Snir and Alex
