Job description:
The Carnegie Institution for Science’s Earth and Planets Laboratory seeks a
highly qualified applicant for a Geoinformatics Scientist position with
expertise in data science and visualization, and application thereof in
deep-time Earth and/or planetary science with a focus on mineralogical
systems. We seek experience in multi-dimensional analysis and
visualization, including proficiency in machine learning, numerical
modeling, high-performance computing, and geospatial analysis. Successful
candidates should have extensive experience with mineralogical data and a
working knowledge of geochemistry, paleobiology, paleotectonics, petrology,
and planetary evolution, particularly in the context of deep-time
data-driven discovery (https://4d.carnegiescience.edu/). Likewise,
successful candidates will be willing to work collaboratively with members
of the 4D Initiative team, including Robert Hazen and Shaunna Morrison at
the Earth and Planets Laboratory, the NASA Astrobiology ENIGMA team (
https://enigma.rutgers.edu/), the Tetherless World Constellation (
https://tw.rpi.edu/), and the Emergence Team at ASU (
http://emergence.asu.edu/).
Minimum qualifications: The applicant must have a PhD in a computer
science, data science, or geoinformatics and must be proficient in methods
of data-driven discovery. Experience with database development,
management, and use; programming, including proficiency in python and R
coding; experience with machine-learning applications to geoscience
problems; and the interest and ability to work knowledgeably with data
scientists, applied mathematics colleagues, Earth and planetary scientists,
biologists, and bioinformaticians, are essential.
This full-time, 2-year position will commence on or after May 1, 2021 and
will be based at the Broad Branch Road campus of the Carnegie Institution
for Science in Washington, DC. Salary commensurate with experience. This is
an FLSA Exempt position. Interested applicants should submit a CV, contact
