2026 will mark the 75th anniversary of the release of USGS Bulletin 980 and the availability of the USGS geochemical reference standards G-1 and W-1.  These were the first such geological standards.  To commemorate this milestone, I am assembling a display for several upcoming professional meetings.

I need a hand sample of the Westerly granite used for G-1. This granite was originally obtained by Felix Chayes from the Smith Granite Company in Westerly, Rhode Island, and was quarried from their principal operation as of June 1947. Reflecting his interests, Chayes focused primarily on describing thin sections and modal analysis of the granite.  I have not found any hand sample descriptions of it beyond noting that it was fine-grained and provided in slab form.

We already have a sample of the diabase used for W-1.  The material for W-1 was collected in 1946 from the original Bull Run Quarry.  This site, just a few miles from the MSA offices, is now known as the Luck Stone Fairfax Quarry, located southwest of Centreville, Virginia.  (Luck Stone’s currently named Bull Run Quarry reportedly did not begin operations until the 1950s.)
