Dear Colleagues,

We are excited to announce the upcoming CONVERSE ER Webinar Series organized by the Emerging Researchers chapter of the CONVERSE Center. Our series aims to provide a platform for graduate students and early career scientists to share their research and develop new skills relevant to the field of volcanic science.

Our next webinar will be presented by Andrea Tonato, a recent graduate from the Masters in Earth and Planetary Sciences program at the University of Hawai’i - Manoa.

Time: August 20, 2024 at 4 PM Eastern Time (UTC-4)
Title: Analog models to promote Geosciences in the Hawaiian Islands

Bio and summary:
Andrea Tonato is a MSc in Earth and Planetary Sciences at University of Hawai'i - Manoa. Her work in Hawai'i focused on the geochemistry, petrology, and modeling of the 1823 lava flow of Kīlauea Volcano. Andrea also worked on analog models to promote the geosciences in the Hawaiian Islands. In this webinar, Andrea will present her analog models of volcanic processes such as dike propagation and caldera collapse. These processes are typical in the Hawaiian Islands and have occurred during Kīlauea's eruptive record, and shaped the caldera that we see nowadays. The aim of this project is to connect local students with their surrounding landscapes. The models were used for outreach activities and school visits creating a visual impact that enhanced students' understanding and learning of volcanism in the Hawaiian islands. Andrea is originally from Ecuador and her previous experience includes outreach for the Imbabura UNESCO Global Geopark, monitoring and fieldwork in Volcan de Colima, and a research internship in the Hawaiian VolcanoObservatory.
