As I recall it, the motion arising out of my Treasurer's report at the October meeting that was passed by Council also included having one meeting per year be a Bradley Symposium with three speakers on related topics.

Hi Carl-Henry, all,

I believe that Carl-Henry is right, and we approved a Bradley Symposium.

I already wrote back directly to Carl-Henry, but since you’ve written to the list I will repeat it here.

I wrote down the proposal, but did not have a disposition. If we did, I will edit accordingly. I’ll have a few short questions for the meeting about this: the text in the treasurer’s report isn’t clear on the intended perlocutionary effect.

To elaborate a little:

The only documentation that I have on the Bradley Fund is the text in the Investment Policy, to whit:

The W.H. Bradley Memorial Fund was established in May, 1979. The
purpose of the Fund, as stated in the original solicitation for
contributions, was that the “proceeds” would “be used to support
a W.H. Bradley Prize(s) for the best paper(s) of the year or for
such other award or activity bearing his name that may later prove
desirable.” In subsequent years, this Fund has also supported the
Great Dane prize for the best informal communication and part of
the costs of an annual Bradley lecture.

The enactment of any year’s Bradley Lecture depends on communication and agreement between the Treasurer, President, and Program Chair. It doesn’t just "be," and sometimes it doesn’t be at all. I assume the intention for the Bradley Symposium is in that vein, but I’m not entirely sure how to word that. I may be overthinking.

One other note I forgot: It is not outside the realm of possibility that we can’t meet in person for the annual meeting. The DC code is flexible in useful ways here, but it might benefit us (and others) to suggest an amendment or executive order allowing videoconferencing for membership meetings.

Subject: Re: [Gsw-councilplus-l] REAL draft October 2019 council minutes
