Position Available:
Postdoctoral research in atom probe analyses of grain boundaries, Brown
University

We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to work in the Department of
Earth, Environmental and Planetary Sciences (
www.brown.edu/academics/earth-environmental-planetary-sciences/) at Brown
University. The successful candidate will work with Profs Reid Cooper and
Stephen Parman on a funded NSF project aimed at understanding the physics
and chemistry of grain boundaries in the mantle. Primarily this will be
achieved through nanoscale analyses of synthetic and naturally deformed
samples using TEM and atom probe tomography. Depending on the interest of
the successful applicant, there is opportunity to become involved in
experimental and theoretical approaches to understanding the role of grain
boundaries within the Earth, as well as other nanoscale analytical
projects. The position is for two years, with the second year depending on
satisfactory progress in the first year.

Candidates should have a Ph.D. in geoscience, but exceptional materials
science candidates will also be considered. Demonstrated substantial
hands-on experience with either TEM or atom probe tomography is required,
including FIB preparation of samples. Experience with rock mechanics is
desirable.

Applications should include a cover letter, short statement of research
interests, CV, publication list and contact information for 3 references.
Application materials should sent as a single PDF to reid_cooper@brown.edu.
The target submission deadline is December 1, 2021. Applications received
before this date will be given full consideration. The target start date is
early 2022, but is negotiable. Women, members of historically
underrepresented groups, and individuals with disabilities are particularly
encouraged to apply. For further information please contact either Reid
Cooper (reid_cooper@brown.edu) or Stephen Parman (stephen_parman@brown.edu).
