Dear colleagues
It is with great sadness that we share the news that Jerry Gibbs passed away on Thursday, Sept. 19th at the age of 96.

Jerry  enjoyed a life full of enthusiasm and an incredible scientific career. He created a new view of chemical bonding in minerals based on electron density calculations.  Jerry was also an inspirational teacher and mentor. His students and postdocs read like a "Who's Who" in Mineralogy.
Jerry's passing is well described by an old Irish proverb: "Don't think that he is gone but that he was here."

We are preparing a tribute for Jerry and will share more information when available.

Jerry Gibbs was a frequent visitor to our department when he had a collaborative research program with Bob Downs. I came to know Jerry quite closely during that period and got together with him and his wife a few times for dinner in our house. We kept in touch even after Jerry stopped visiting us. Anything that I could say about Jerry’s scientific contributions would be redundant as I am sure that those will be highlighted by his many stellar students and colleagues. The personal side of Jerry that I saw was that of a very warm and compassionate human being, always eager to help in any way that he could. He had an enormous passion for science, doing hands-on frontier level research in quantum mineralogy, a field of which he was a founding father, even when he was in the mid-eighties, and he generously shared key ideas with others. Over the dinner table, he shared with me interesting stories about his transformation to quantum mineralogy from conventional mineralogical crystallography with the help of Prof. Robert Mulliken, while he was a post-doc at my alma mater, The University of Chicago.
