Applications are now open for a fully funded PhD position at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign Department of Geology, in collaboration with the Institut de Physique du Globe in Paris. We are seeking a motivated student interested in understanding temporal and spatial patterns in the signatures of Critical Zone weathering through the use of stable silicon and lithium isotope ratios in natural systems spanning small catchments to large river basins. Open questions focus on how solutes are produced and exported out of watersheds, how vegetation and soil formation regulates these fluxes and how water resources and quality are ultimately impacted. We use a suite of research tools, including lab-based geochemical and isotope analyses, field study, and process-based modeling. Students with a background in hydrology, geosciences, engineering and computational sciences are encouraged to apply. The deadline for application is January 15th, 2022. Interested students are encouraged to contact Dr. Jennifer Druhan (jdruhan@illinois.edumailto:jdruhan@illinois.edu) before the application deadline to discuss research experience, interests and career aspirations.
