The Georgia State University Geosciences Department is seeking a post-doctoral associate to investigate the occurrence and distribution of critical minerals in sands, kaolin, bauxite, and mine waste materials across the Southeastern Coastal Plain of Georgia. The post-doctoral associate will conduct fieldwork at mines, quarries, and other sampling locations; collect and document samples; perform laboratory-based chemical and mineralogical analyses; maintain detailed records of field observations and sample metadata; and integrate analytical results with existing geological information to better understand the processes responsible for the concentration of critical minerals in the Coastal Plain.
Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in geological sciences or a closely related discipline by the time of appointment. Preference will be given to applicants with knowledge of Coastal Plain and Piedmont geology, experience in field sampling and characterization methods, and a demonstrated strong interest in critical minerals and the geological processes that govern their formation, transport, and concentration. The successful candidate should be motivated to work in a collaborative, and interdisciplinary research environment composed of academic, industry, and state and federal agencies. The position will begin on January 1, 2027. An initial appointment for 1 year. Potential renewal is possible for up to two more years upon funding availability and satisfactory progress.
This post-doctoral position is funded by the U.S. DOE CORE CM Program via a recent award to the Georgia Tech-led consortium composed of several academic, industry and government partners to study the occurrences of critical minerals in the Atlantic Seaboard Region.
