Webinar Speaker - 17 February 2021

[cid:image002.jpg@01D70126.B7C428B0]

Joseph Lee Dorris, a 45-year resident of Colorado, was born in Kirkland, King County, Washington in 1952, the son of Katherine [Raths] and William Dorris, a captain in the Marine Corps. He grew up in McCall, Idaho where he began collecting minerals at age 6, attracted to a shiny pegmatite specimen he found in his schoolyard. He hunted sapphires and garnets, and as a teenager, he eventually discovered several new pegmatite occurrences. He spent many field trips roaming remote localities and learning about gem deposits.

Joe graduated from the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs with degree in Life Science and later earned his Master of Business Administration from the University of Montana. Following a 20-year career as an Air Force officer, Joe transitioned to teaching high school earth science and biology and coaching soccer.

Since his days as a cadet Joe has spent every weekend and vacation mining at various Colorado localities. He married Susan Anderson and together they have three children: Scott, Timothy, and Krystle. By the time his children had reached the ages of 4 or 5 he was already taking them along on collecting trips, primarily to sites in Idaho and Colorado. He finally became a full-time miner and mineral dealer in 2006, as proprietor of the family business, Pinnacle 5 Minerals. Since the 1990s he has utilized mechanized equipment and new techniques to mine the deeper pegmatite structures that had not previously been tapped. Recently, he and his family have uncovered some of the finest amazonite and smoky quartz specimens ever found in Colorado.

Joe has written three novels on 19th-century life in Central Idaho, dealing particularly with the lives of miners; he enjoys painting as well, and has illustrated all of his novels. He has had a lifetime interest in Native American culture and history, pioneer gold rushes, and mining history.

The Dorris family has recently been featured on the Weather Channel’s program Prospectors. They have a love for pegmatite minerals and currently operate claims on Mount Antero for aquamarine, Pilot Peak (Tarryall Mountains) for topaz, and near Crystal Peak, notably the Smoky Hawk claim, for amazonite and smoky quartz. Their most notable finds include the Legend and the Smoky Hawk King, two enormous amazonite and smoky quartz specimens. The specimens that are featured in their chapter in the Mineral Collections in Colorado supplement are all self-collected, and most of the family’s mineral collection consists of specimens they have traded for, found, or mined.

The American Mineral Heritage Award is presented each year by the Mineralogical Record to recognize individuals for field collecting achievements contributing to the heritage of North American mineral specimens. The Award Committee is proud to announce the recipient for 2021: Joe Doris.
