I am seeking a postdoctoral researcher for a newly funded NSF project. The
person hired would join a collaborative team to study the interactions of
iron and organic matter in the marine photic zone. The post-doc will focus
on measuring the physical and chemical properties of marine colloids and
particles using synchrotron X-ray spectromicroscopy, advanced electron
microscopy, and other complementary analytical approaches.

*Position Description: *The Post-Doctoral Researcher will be mentored by
Dr. Brandy Toner (University of Minnesota) and will measure the physical
and chemical properties of marine colloids and particles. The Post-Doc will
have the following responsibilities:
● Conduct original research on the interactions of iron and organic
matter in the marine photic zone using synchrotron X-ray spectromicroscopy,
advanced electron microscopy, and complementary analytical approaches (50%);
● Participate in 4-5 oceanographic expeditions from Bermuda Institute
of Ocean Sciences (BATS) (15%);
● Participate in synchrotron instrument time (5%);
● Prepare research findings for peer review publication (25%);
● Communicate regularly with supervisors, mentors, and project
collaborators (5%).
Required Qualifications:
● Ph.D. in chemistry, oceanography, aqueous geochemistry, or a
related discipline;
● At least one prior experience in shipboard oceanographic field work
or related experience;
● Prior experience with analytical chemistry;
● Demonstrated scientific publication record;
● Demonstrated effective communication skills in a variety of
settings (daily workplace interactions, project planning and outcomes,
collaborative interactions, written reports, and presentations);
● Ability to work with and maintain professional relationships with
collaborators and co-workers.
Preferred Qualifications:
● Prior experience with trace metal clean sample collection and
analytical procedures;
● Prior experience with synchrotron X-ray microscopy or electron
microscopy techniques;
Salary & Duration: Base annual salary in year 1 is $61,800. Appointment
is 1 year full-time and renewable for 2nd and 3rd years upon satisfactory
progress.
