Hi everyone,

We invite you to contribute an abstract to the following topical session at the annual GSA meeting:

T88. Charting Soils at the Atomic Scale: A Tribute to the Careers of David L. Bish and Jeffrey E. Post

No two scientists have contributed more to the application of state-of-the-art techniques for interrogating the complex mineralogy of soils and sediments at the nanoscale than David Bish and Jeffrey Post. As pioneers of the development of Rietveld refinement for Earth materials, Dave Bish and Jeff Post have inspired generations of environmental scientists to harness X-ray and neutron diffraction to illuminate minerals that lie at the edge of crystallinity. To honor their impact, this symposium invites contributions in the broad areas of soil, clay, and nanoparticle crystallography and geochemistry. This session is co-sponsored by MSA, the Clay Minerals Society, and the GSA MGVP and Soils and Soil Processes Divisions.

Invited speakers will include Dr. Gabriela Farfan (US National Museum of Natural History) and Dr. Hsiu-Wen Wang (Oak Ridge National Laboratory).

The 2022 GSA annual meeting will be held in-person in Denver, CO from Oct. 9-12. Please note that GSA will accommodate live online presentations for those speakers unable to attend in-person.

Best wishes,
Peter Heaney, Penn State University
Sasha Wilson, University of Alberta
