After almost three decades as Managing Editor of MSA's flagship journal, American Mineralogist, Rachel Russell is retiring, effective September 30, 2024. The Assistant Managing Editor of two decades, Christine Elrod, will be taking over as Managing Editor, effective October 1, 2024. Rachel and Christine have been actively cross-training for the last 18 months, covering topics from submissions to delivery of final files and all else that is American Mineralogist. We therefore expect a seamless transition and a continuation of high-quality support for authors and editors.
"The key thing I have learned from being the American Mineralogist Managing Editor all these years," Rachel said, "is that there are always challenges to face and people to help. It has truly been an honor to be the person helping."
As Assistant Managing Editor, Christine has concentrated on production and specializes in copyediting and proofreading. Her expertise will continue in those areas when she is Managing Editor. However, through a partnership with one of MSA's publishing vendors, she is already transitioning the journal production to be based on XML, instead of converted to XML at the end. This change will take over much of the composition tasks now done by the editorial office and will result in faster production, lower costs, and equal quality. Kristi Bailey continues in her role as Editorial Assistant, primarily helping authors with the peer review database, initial figure quality, and with the new American Mineralogist website.
MSA has been incredibly fortunate to have had Rachel's strong leadership and expertise for many years at the helm of American Mineralogist. We wish her all the very best in her retirement and look forward to working with Christine in her new role.
Donna L. Whitney, 2024 MSA President

I (and I’m sure many others) send my very best regards to Rachel for her excellent service, and best wishes for a pleasant and enjoyable retirement.
