Dear All,

The 37th International Geological Congress will take place in the beautiful
city of Busan https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Busan, South Korea from 25-31
August 2024.

We encourage submissions for "Responsible Mining of Critical Minerals and
the Importance of Environmental Justice" in Theme 35, session 3
https://www.igc2024korea.org/content/14403.

The grand challenge of transitioning energy infrastructure away from fossil
fuels to renewable resources requires responsible mining of critical
minerals to build photovoltaic (PV) solar panels, wind turbines, battery
electric vehicles and electricity transmission. For example, the amount of
copper that needs to be mined every year for the next several decades is
several times that produced in 2022. Similarly, we need to increase the
responsibly mined amounts of cobalt, chromium, lithium, nickel and rare
earths by tens to thousands of times current annual production. Responsible
mining includes environmental justice and requires meaningful assessment
and transparent documentation of social and environmental performance at
mine sites using an internationally recognized standard developed in
consultation with a wide range of stakeholders. This session focuses on the
multi-faceted integration of human and natural worlds in an effort towards
environmental justice and positive actions in decision making. The intent
of this session is to share useful strategies and protocols, to effect
positive actions and outcomes.

The deadline for the abstract submission is 16 February 2024.

Please visit IGC 2024 website at https://www.igc2024korea.org/ for further
information.

Please email me if you have a question.

Thanks,

Adam Simon and Elizabeth Holley
