I am saddened to hear of the death of Joe Smyth. Joe was essentially a contemporary of mine. I have only the greatest regard for Joe's scientific ability and accomplishments. We in the geological sciences have been so fortunate to have Joe as one of our own. Sincerely, Guy Hovis
