Ph.D. student and postdoctoral research associate positions at UNC Chapel Hill

I would like to draw your attention to the following postdoctoral and Ph.D. positions at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

1 - Postdoctoral research associate: Petrologic and Tectonic processes

The Department of Earth, Marine and Environmental Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (https://emes.unc.edu/) seeks a highly motivated postdoctoral research associate in petrology and tectonic processes. Prof. Kennet E. Flores will supervise the successful candidate.

The principal selection criteria are scientific excellence and a clearly expressed research plan to investigate fundamental questions in (i) Fluid-rock interaction at the subduction interface or (ii) Petrochronology of HP-LT rocks. Applications from related fields are welcomed. This full-time position is for two years (second year pending satisfactory progress) and includes salary and benefits. Research funding is available, but the successful candidate will be encouraged to apply for external funding. The start date is July 1, 2022.

Required Qualifications: Applicants must complete a Ph.D. before starting, have research experience in petrology, geochemistry, and/or geochronology, and have excellent written and oral communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications: Priority will be given to applicants with relevant and demonstrable research experience, as evidenced by relevant publications

  3. A statement of research that describes your research interests, anticipated career plans, and the research proposal to be pursued at UNC. 2 - Ph.D. student position: Fluid-rock interaction at the subduction interface

We invite applications for one funded Ph.D. student position in fluid-rock interaction at the subduction interface in the Department of Earth, Marine, and Environmental Sciences (EMES) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (https://emes.unc.edu/). This interdisciplinary project will touch on petrochronology, microthermometry, and geochemistry of fluid-related rocks and rehydrated metabasites from the subduction interface. The applicants will work under the supervision of Prof. Kennet E. Flores.

Required Qualifications: Applicants must complete a master's or bachelor’s degree in Geology, Earth Sciences, or related fields before starting, have experience in petrology (e.g., PLM, SEM, Raman, EMPA), and geochemistry, and have excellent written and oral communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications: Priority will be given to applicants with relevant and demonstrable experience, as evidenced by research projects, internships, REU, conference participations, and publications
