Dear colleagues,

I am writing to bring your attention to a Goldschmidt 2022 Workshop: PyGeoChemCalc: Ambient to Deep Earth geochemical thermodynamic calculations. The workshop will occur on  Saturday, July 9 8:30 - Noon HST - in person in Hawaii and online everywhere  - and will be presented by  Adedapo Awolayo and Benjamin Tutolo

PyGeochemCalc (pyGCC) is a new, open-source python package (https://pygcc.readthedocs.io/en/latest/) that provides an integrated set of functions to calculate the thermodynamic properties of aqueous, mineral, and gas species and reactions amongst these species. It also permits the estimation of the thermodynamic properties of mineral solid-solutions and variable-structure and variable-chemistry clay minerals. The pyGCC package utilizes the well-established revised Helgeson-Kirkham-Flowers (HKF) equation of state, and density extrapolations based on it, to calculate the thermodynamic properties of aqueous species at ambient to deep Earth temperature and pressure conditions.

In this workshop, the developers of pyGCC will provide tutorials for using pyGCC to perform thermodynamic calculations as well as generate thermodynamic databases for software such as the Geochemist's Workbench and EQ3/6. We will also provide examples of how Python tools can be used to efficiently and effectively run simulations of water-rock interaction. Active course participants will be proficient users of the software by the time that the workshop concludes.

Scholarships (free registration) will be available to inquiring Early Career Researchers - contact benjamin.tutolo@ucalgary.camailto:benjamin.tutolo@ucalgary.ca

We hope that you will consider attending - Registration closes on May 31st!

Best wishes,

Ben
