Thank you to Arlo Weil for notifying us of the sad news of the passing of our friend Weecha Crawford. Edward Grew and I extend our very deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Professor Emerita Maria Luisa Crawford, Class of 1960 at Bryn Mawr College and Ph.D. 1965 at the Dept. of Earth and Planetary Science - UC Berkeley. Weecha and I both took Physics 101 in Dalton Hall my freshman year 1958/1959 and then I followed her to Berkeley in the fall of 1962 where we shared a grad student office until she left to join the faculty at Bryn Mawr in 1965. Weecha graduated summa cum laude at the top of the Class of 1960 and I was always in total awe of her seemingly effortless success in coursework and research. She merrily knitted during our physics lectures while I struggled to take notes. She was a tremendous mentor and inspiration to generations of students during her 40-year career on the faculty at Bryn Mawr. She was awarded the 1988 Outstanding Educator Award from the Association for Women Geoscientists and in 1993 she was awarded a MacArthur ‘Genius’ Fellowship. The AWG Crawford Field Camp Scholarships continue to honor Weecha and help women students offset geology field camp expenses.
