Dear Colleagues,
The Department of Geological Sciences at New Mexico State University is
currently recruiting for M.S. students beginning in Spring 2026 and Fall
2026. We are seeking graduate students who could work on projects related
to mineralogy, geochemistry, volcanology, paleobotany, stratigraphy,
tectonics, geochronology, and rock magnetism. Funding is available through
teaching assistantships and additional scholarship opportunities.
Research Areas
*Mineralogy, igneous and sedimentary petrography, volcanology: Dr.
Jennifer Thines (jthines@nmsu.edu)
High temperature and isotope geochemistry, volcanology: Dr. Frank Ramos (
framos@nmsu.edu)*
*Paleobotany, paleoclimatology, and terrestrial stratigraphy: Dr. Andrew
Flynn (agflynn@nmsu.edu)
Stratigraphy, basin evolution, tectonics: Dr. Brian Hampton (
bhampton@nmsu.edu)*
Laramide tectonics, Rio Grande rift magmatism and sedimentation, study of
Proterozoic granites: Dr. Jeffrey Amato (amato@nmsu.edu)
*Rock magnetism, deep lithosphere deformation, finite strain analysis: Dr.
Eric Ferre (eferre@nmsu.edu)[Tu 10/22 only]
*indicates that they will be at the GSA Meeting in San Antonio, TX, Oct

lab-based teaching and research. The department offers B.S. and M.S.
degrees in geology and consists of six faculty members active in a wide
range of research topics. We host extensive analytical equipment, clean
lab, rock magnetism lab, rock preparation, and mineral separation
facilities. More information about the department can be found at
