Tomorrow's GSW meeting, and a 'short' discussion on the AGU proposal to host our future meetings

Dear GSW Council, and other interested GSW members,
We have a meeting tomorrow evening, and I hope that you will be able to attend. I propose to announce the AGU offer prior to our talks. I propose to summarize the offer, and let the members know how we propose to evaluate the offer. The financial committee is already hard at work evaluating it. I think a trial run is critical, and we could use the Bradley Lecture for this. The Bradley Lecture (Steve Nerem, Univ. Colorado, Multi-decadal sea-level change from satellite) is scheduled for Nov. 13. I am in the process of informing the Cosmos Club so that they will have the opportunity to prepare a counter-offer. I will probably ask Brooks Hanson to stand, as he is the primary force behind the AGU offer. I would also like to offer selected GSW council members and one other person the opportunity to speak briefly tomorrow evening, one focusing on the positive implications of the offer, and one on the negative implications. I think that both Callan Bentley and Carl-Henry Geschwind have articulated the positive implications of the offer, but I don’t have anyone yet who wants to articulate the negative implications. If any of the GSW council would like to speak please let me know, and give me a short summary of what you want to say.  I don’t want to unduly delay the primary purpose of the meeting, to hear our speakers, and I want to be finished before 10 PM, so I will cut this off if we get too long-winded.  I would also encourage those Council members, and others to whom I have sent this message, who can’t attend, but who want to comment, to send me their thoughts.  I can consolidate them and if necessary summarize their thoughts myself. I propose that the AGU offer go on the Agenda for the Fall Council meeting, and I again suggest either 2 Oct or 23 Oct for that meeting. Please email me your preferences for the date if you haven’t already done so. I suggest that we commence that meeting at 2 PM, and I also suggest that it be held at AGU headquarters again. AGU has already indicated that they can accommodate us.  Sincerely, Mike
