GeoScienceWorld (GSW) has acquired Lithosphere, formerly published by The Geological Society of America (GSA).  Lithosphere is an established online-only, open access journal originally launched in 2009 by GSA with a focus on tectonic processes.  It will now expand to include coverage of research in all areas of earth, planetary, and environmental sciences.  Lithosphere will continue to publish under GSA through December 31, 2019, with GSW taking over January 1, 2020.

GSW's Lithosphere will provide an option for authors who need to have their work published in a "Full Gold Open Access" or "Pure Gold Open Access" journal as required by a number of European funding organizations. That is, a journal where no subscription fees are charged for any part of the publication.

The initiative is an alliance between GSW and the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), Geological Society of America (GSA), Geological Society of London (GSL), Mineralogical Society of America (MSA), Society for Sedimentary Geology (SEPM), Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG), and the Society of Economic Geologists (SEG).  MSA and the other societies were seeking a financially viable Pure Gold Open Access publishing solution.  By publishing Lithosphere as a shared initiative among societies, GSW will provide a timely, valuable, and sustainable solution.
