Session Description :
Iron oxide transformations in surface environments are profoundly influenced by a complex variety of geochemical factors, such as inorganic material (e.g., clays, contaminants, trace elements), organic matter (e.g., microbes), temperature, and solution pH. The complicated transformation processes among iron oxides can involve redox reactions between Fe2+/Fe3+, adsorption of foreign species, microbial activity, dissolution of precursors, and crystallization. To address the structural evolution of iron oxides, numerous approaches have emerged in the last few decades, including in-situ diffraction, real-time spectroscopy, high-resolution electron microscopy, 3D SIMS mapping, and computational modeling in DFT or MD simulations. Although these techniques provide detailed analyses of crystal structures and surface reactions, fundamental questions regarding iron oxide transformation pathways, mechanisms, and kinetics are far from being well understood. This session welcomes contributions from field-based, experimental, and computational approaches highlighting recent advances in (bio)geochemical and mineralogical processes of iron oxides, including: abiotic and biogenic iron oxides, mechanisms of iron oxide (trans)formation, organic and contaminant adsorption of iron oxides, iron oxides and water surface interactions, iron redox transitions, and iron oxide applications in industry.
Abstracts are due by October 14th, 2019.
