Speaker - Buzz Gray

Elvis Leroy "Buzz" Gray was born in Santa Barbara, California, on October 24, 1933. Growing up in Taft, California, he developed an interest in minerals while working in oil fields. Buzz served in the U.S. Air Force (1953-1957) and collected agates during off-hours. He attended Taft College and Fresno State College, earning a B.A. in Geology in 1960. Post-graduation, he worked for Laval Underground Surveys for a decade and dabbled in gold mining. By 1967, he began selling mineral specimens.
In 1970, Buzz moved to Fallbrook, California, joining Pala Properties International. He traveled extensively, representing Pala at various gem and mineral shows across the U.S. and Europe. Buzz collected minerals worldwide, favoring sites like the Benitoite Gem Minehttps://collectorsedge.com/benitoite-gem-mine-san-benito-county-california/ and the Colorado Quartz Minehttps://www.facebook.com/cqmine/, which he once owned. His ventures included partnerships with notable figures such as Bill Forrest and his son, Mike Gray.
Buzz contributed to many articles and books, with photos of his specimens gracing numerous covers. His mined pieces are preserved in private collections and museums globally. Buzz built a notable collection from the Benitoite mine with his son. He retired in 2022 and resides in Missoula, Montana.
