Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce the opening of a 4-year PhD scholarship
position in the research project entitled "Immobilization of U and Th
by Pb-activated zeolite
" carried out by the LARG research team
(https://larg.agh.edu.pl/larg/ ) at the Department of Mineralogy,
Petrography and Geochemistry, AGH University of Kraków, Poland. The
project is funded by Polish NCN (an equivalent of NSF in USA). The scope
of work includes, among others: experimental determination of the extent
and mechanism of uranium and thorium immobilization; determination of
structure and incorporation mechanisms of U and Th in pyromorphite
Pb₅(PO₄)₃Cl; theoretical basis and lab testing of a reactive geochemical
barrier composed of a hydroxylapatite - Pb-zeolite mineral mixture for
effective immobilization of U(VI) and Th via coprecipitation with
pyromorphite on zeolite. The project is run in collaboration with Dr.
Peter Burns from the University of Notre Dame.
