Prof. Bruce Cairncross

Department of Geology, University of Johannesburg

https://www.uj.ac.za/contact/Pages/Prof-B-Cairncross.aspx

Bruce Cairncross obtained his Master’s degree in 1979 from the University of Natal in Pietermaritzburg and after a stint working for Rand Mines coal division, joined the University of the Witwatersrand graduating with a PhD in 1986.  He had a tenure as a post-doctoral fellow at the Economic Geology Research Unit before joining Rand Afrikaans University in 1989, where has worked for the past 32 years and during this time he served as Head of Department for 13 years. During his tenure he led one of South Africa’s premier geology departments through its merger with the Witwatersrand Technikon to form the now merged University of Johannesburg Geology department.

Prof Cairncross’ geological career encompasses three elements: as a mineral expert, primarily with respect to southern African gems and minerals; as a coal geologist researching the Karoo coal deposits; and as an educator, having been in the tertiary education environment for over 40 years.

During his career, his research outputs include over 180 articles on coal geology, gems and minerals; 11 books and six chapters in books (12th currently underway); 134 public lectures on gems, minerals and coal geology and has supervised 28 Masters and PhD students. He has taught at least two generations of students and many of South Africa’s coal geologists were educated by him.

Bruce is an award-winning photographer of minerals and gemstones. His accolades include winning the National Research Foundation / South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement first prize in the “Science as Art” category in 2011 and again in 2020, and he has twice won the International Tucson Gem & Mineral Photographic mineral competition in 2009 and 2013. Professor Cairncross was awarded the Geological Society of South Africa’s (GSSA) Presidential Award in 2009 for services rendered to the Johannesburg Geological Museum and South African mineral heritage. In 2020 he was honoured with the Draper Medal by the Geological Society of South Africa, the highest award that this learned society can bestow, for lifetime achievement and contribution to South African geology, geoheritage, and tertiary education.

Together with Nic Beukes, Bruce has also won the Jubilee Medal for the best article in the South African Journal of Geology. The Friends of Mineralogy “Best Paper Award” in the Mineralogical Record in 2006 was won by Bruce and co-author Uli Bahmann for their article on the Erongo Mountains in Namibia, and in 2019, the FoM gave a similar honour to Malcolm Southwood, Bruce, and Mike Rumsey’s Rocks & Minerals article on Kabwe, Zambia. (Bruce serves on the Editorial Board of both the publications).

He has served the GSSA in various capacities such as an elected Council member, the Honorary Secretary of the Sedimentology Division for 11 years, the Conservation Committee, the Centennial Co-ordination Committee, the Activation Committee and the Professional Affairs Committee. He was also the Vice President of the International Association of Sedimentologists and is still a member of the Johannesburg Geological Museum Association committee which he chaired for 10 years.
