Open Position: Curatorial Assistant III

Job Summary/ Position Description

The Curatorial Assistant will work under the supervision of the Curator of the Mineralogical and Geological Museum Collections at Harvard University (MGMHhttps://mgmh.fas.harvard.edu/) and within a curatorial team, assisting with the preservation and care of the collections following and documenting the procedures and best practices of museum management and curation.  The Curatorial Assistant will also play a key role in the curation and digitization of the Earth History Archive collection, mainly stored at the MGMH off-site facility.

The Curatorial Assistant is responsible for re-housing parts of the collection and entering, sorting, filing, and consolidating the data into the MGMH internal database, TMS by Gallery Systems, and external online tool, eMuseum.  Cataloguing, inventory, and photographing the collection will be the highest priority followed by the development of guidelines, workflow, and procedures for the safe keeping of the Earth Archive collection.  Addresses conservation issues with simple, practical solutions for long-term care and preservation.  Move objects to new storage space in line with object needs and update relevant database fields.  Associated typical job duties include administrative functions as assigned by the Museum's curatorial leadership.

Basic Qualifications

A minimum of one-year of professional work experience in a Mineral Museum environment.

Additional Qualifications and Skills

Bachelor's degree preferred. Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. Demonstrated computer skills, including databases, file management, and Microsoft Office Suite. Familiarity with visual resources, photographic, archival, or special collections projects in an academic setting preferred. Ability to perform repetitive tasks, remain flexible, and adapt to shifting conditions and timelines.

Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills. Excellent attention to detail and ability to sustain production-oriented efforts over the project period.

Physical Requirements

The applicant must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs, is comfortable climbing ladders, and willing to work two-third of their weekly schedule at a remote Cambridge storage facility with limited heating and cooling controls.
