Folks, I am soliciting suggestions of companies that you use for getting
research thin sections of rocks (rather than experimental products) made?
Thank you!

Hi Hanna,

I recommend either Spectrum Petrographic in Vancouver Washington (http://www.petrography.com/ http://www.petrography.com/), or Wagner Petrographic in Lindon Utah (https://www.wagnerpetrographic.com/ https://www.wagnerpetrographic.com/).

Both make excellent polished thin sections. Spectrum sections are slightly better (but very similar to Wagner). They take longer, but they’ve also worked with me for some specialty-type sections. I’ve been impressed with Wagner's turnaround, especially considering their high quality.

Best,

Matt

Note: While I may send email outside of regular business hours, I do not expect the same from others.

Hello,

I use Quality Thin Sections in Tucson, AZ. They do a good job. Once I did get a batch of thin sections that were too thick, and they offered to redo them.

Hi Hanna,

Give Burnham Petrographics a try. I’ve tried others over my career, but always come back to them. Their thin sections are works of art. FYI, Brian Burnham is Wayne Burnham’s nephew.

Indeed, I forgot to mention that Spectrum will polish them on both sides
and can deal with difficult samples.  They also surround their sections
with a border of feldspar and quartz grains, which produce low order
interference colors (if one can call grey and white colors) at 30 microns
so you know that the section is cut down to the appropriate thickness.

Hi Hanna,
I also tend to recommend Spectrum, especially for folks interested in having sections for synchrotron work, which often require polished sections with no cover slips and on low contamination quartz glass. They're also good about using varied epoxies if needed.

Hi Hanna,

I recommend either Spectrum Petrographic in Vancouver Washington (http://www.petrography.com/), or Wagner Petrographic in Lindon Utah (https://www.wagnerpetrographic.com/).

Both make excellent polished thin sections. Spectrum sections are slightly better (but very similar to Wagner). They take longer, but they’ve also worked with me for some specialty-type sections. I’ve been impressed with Wagner's turnaround, especially considering their high quality.

Best,

Matt

My group has been very happy with thin sections and specialized polished
samples (including fragile or otherwise challenging minerals/rocks)
from Grindstone
Lab https://grindstonelab.com/ in Oregon. They use a border of quartz
grains that provides a useful gauge of thickness.

Greetings Thin Section Enthusiasts!

I've tried several companies over the years with variable degrees of success.  Recently, I've used "Grindstone Lab" in Portland, OR and their work is superb.  I highly recommend them for standard and polished thin sections.

Cheers,

Bob.
