JOB OPPORTUNITY: Seeking a geologist with a focus on petrology for a permanent lectureship

The University of Bristol School of Earth Sciences seeks an outstanding geologist for a permanent Lectureship (Assistant Professor) appointment. The research area is broadly defined as the petrological study of the Earth, and we welcome applications from across that discipline, from shallow crust to core and encompassing igneous and metamorphic petrology and mineral resources.

The School of Earth Sciences is internationally leading in research, teaching, and impact, with research and teaching interests that span the discipline. The Petrology Group’s research encompasses the structure, formation, evolution and dynamics of Earth from shallow crust to core. Specific topics include crustal processes (tectonics, magmatism, volcanism, and mineral resources), subduction and deep volatile cycling, magma generation in the mantle, superdeep diamond inclusions, core formation and the differentiation of the early Earth, and the physical properties of minerals and melts. The Petrology Group collaborates with every other group in the School. It also leads and participates in diverse multidisciplinary collaborations with other schools in Science and Engineering at the University and with external partners in industry (e.g., BHP) as well as academic institutions in the UK and across the world.

We particularly welcome applications from candidates with plans to take advantage of the world-class facilities for experimental petrology housed within the School. The Group hosts a unique and cutting-edge combination of experimental and analytical facilities that allow experiments to be performed at conditions of pressure and temperature ranging from the surface of the Earth to its centre. Much of our equipment is designed, built and maintained in-house with the aid of the School’s well-equipped machine shop. These are embedded in a suite of outstanding School Facilities, including the Bristol Isotope Geochemistry mass spectrometry labs and a world-class electron microbeam suite. University researchers also have free access to a growing range of exceptional high-performance computing resources, including the BlueCrystal 4 and Isambard supercomputers.  Group members are also closely involved with cutting edge technique development at a variety of international synchrotron user facilities.

The successful candidate will conduct world-class, innovative and agenda-setting research that complements and extends the diverse research portfolio of the existing Petrology Group and the broader School, which includes internationally renowned Volcanology and Geochemistry research groups. A track record of research excellence and an ability to obtain external funding are essential.

The post holder will also be enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge with students and will have a strong commitment to both classroom and field teaching. We offer undergraduate BSc and MSci degree programmes in Geology, Geophysics, Environmental Geoscience, and Palaeontology and Evolution (~80 students per year total). The School also has two postgraduate taught MSc programmes including one in Volcanology, in addition to a vibrant cohort of postgraduate research students (~100 total).
