Dear Members of the Meteoritical Society,
I am writing to inform you that the Meteoritical Society was recently the
target of an elaborate cyber-crime that has unfortunately resulted in a
loss (amounting to some tens of thousands of dollars) to one of our
operating accounts. We have confirmed that the fraudulent activity has been
stopped, and that all of our accounts are secure. I also want to assure our
members that Council is taking action to protect proactively against such
fraudulent activity in the future. Although no society officers or members
are implicated in any way, Karen Ziegler as the Society’s responsible
executive officer has stepped down as Treasurer. Candace Kohl has kindly
agreed to step in as Acting Treasurer (until such time as a new treasurer
is appointed, but no later than May 31, 2019).
Finally, I wish to express my deep gratitude and thanks to our society
officers and councilors for their dedicated service, and to all our society
members for your continued support during this transition.
Sincerely,
Meenakshi Wadhwa
President, the Meteoritical Society
