Travel Support for US-based Early Career Researchers and Students for the
AGU Chapman Conference on Caldera-Rift Systems (Hilo, Hawai‘i 2025)
Volcano friends and colleagues,
The town of Hilo, Hawai‘i will host an exceptional AGU Chapman Conference
February 10-14 on the topic of volcanic Caldera-Rift Systems (please see
conference details here:
https://www.agu.org/chapman-basaltic-caldera-forming-eruptions).
We are happy to announce that support from the National Science
Foundation (via
the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa) will be available for early career
researchers (ECRs), including undergraduate and graduate students,
postdoctoral and other non-permanent researchers to attend the conference.
Support will include travel (up to $1000, or $250 for Hawai'i residents),
lodging (up to $600), and cover conference registration costs.
Conditions for applying:
- For ECRs/students in US-based institutions
- For non-tenured/permanent researchers (email tshea@hawaii.edu for
exceptions)
How to apply? By filling this form:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeotj3RRlltu0--ibXZ7Jvt7ULVd_Mv99WZ-rDF8gY3-zHTRA/viewform?usp=sf_link
Deadline:
Note the short-fuse deadline, please submit your applications by Friday
October 25th.
Note about abstract submission:
Even though the original abstract submission deadline (Oct 9) has passed,
AGU and the organizing team are making an exception for recipients of this
travel support fund. Abstract submission for this conference is free, and
encouraged for applicants with graduate student, postdoctoral or other
researcher status, but not necessarily expected of undergraduate applicants
(although they definitely have the option to submit one). Indicate your
intent to present work and submit an abstract on the application form
directly. If you have already submitted an abstract for the conference,
also indicate it on the form.
Note about attending (if selected):
Attending conferences, especially for the first time(s) can be
intimidating, stressful as much as it offers an amazing highlight of the
cool, state-of-the-art volcano science being pursued worldwide. The travel
support grantees will be helped and shepherded through the conference by
other ECRs. Due to the small conference size, childcare support will not be
organized by AGU. However, ECR parents eager to hear about options can
contact us, we will help you look into it.
We look forward to seeing you in Hilo for a fantastic Hawai‘i conference!
Questions can be sent to tshea@hawaii.edu.
