Barbra Barret joined the Maine Mineral & Gem Museumhttps://mainemineralmuseum.org/’s team in 2012 in the project’s infancy. Her entire prior career was spent in experiential based education, including a long tenure at Outward Bound where she held senior leadership roles and worked with people from every walk of life — instructing adjudicated youth programs, facilitating professional development trainings and managing international college semester courses. She credits her time with the Outward Bound School as the most influential, teaching her  education can happen anywhere at anytime—from alligator infested rivers, high mountain peaks, in the classroom and yes, in museums. From concept to completion, Barbra’s approach to education and team building has been essential in building the MMGM.  Along the way, she’s learned a lot too. With mentors like Dr. Carl Francis, Barbra found a new love for minerals although her true passion…space rocks. Barbra co-curated the MMGM’s meteorite gallery and when away from her desk, you can find her there.

Dr. Carl A. Francis earned his AB in geology from Amherst College in 1971 and his MS and PhD from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. His professional interests include systematic mineralogy and the geology of pegmatites. He retired in 2011 after thirty-four years as curator of the Harvard University Mineralogical Museum. He also taught museum studies in the Harvard Extension School for twenty years.  He is currently curator for the Maine Mineral & Gem Museum, Bethel, Maine.  He received the Carnegie Mineralogical Award for 1992 from the Hillman Foundation of the Carnegie Museum of Natural History.  He is a Fellow of the Mineralogical Society of America and served as chairman of the International Mineralogical Association Commission on Museums.

The mission of the MMGM, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is to celebrate the mineralogy of Maine and to enlighten visitors as to the origin of Earth and beyond through dynamic exhibits, educational programming and scientific research—all designed to fire the imagination.  This one-of-a-kind, world-class museum is located a stone’s throw away from the Western Maine mines that once sheltered these mineral treasures.  The MMGM houses the finest collection of Maine minerals and gems. It includes the famous Perham Collection, viewed by generations in a local mineral store that operated for ninety years. The MMGM displays one of the world’s foremost collections of extraterrestrial rocks—meteorites from Mars, the Moon and the Asteroid Belt that teach us about the origins of our Solar System, including the five largest pieces of the Moon on Earth!
