Instructors: Laura Ruhl; Malcolm Siegel; Robert Finkelman; and Reto Gieré Endorsed by: GSA Geology and Health Division, International Medical Geology Association Abstract: This course will illustrate how the natural environment impacts human health and how geoscientists can help biomedical/public health researchers and policy makers identify the causes of different environmental health issues, as well as prevent their negative impacts on public health. The course begins with an overview of principles of epidemiology, toxicology, and geochemistry that can be used to evaluate exposures to environmental contaminants and the resultant effective doses. Subsequent lectures focus on case studies involving dust, mining, geogenic contaminants, geological materials and their health effects, and illustrations of how geologic materials and processes both positively and negatively impact human health. The course lessons are focused on the topics covered in the book Practical Applications of Medical Geology (2021) and reference materials will be provided to students.
