Building on our shared interest in understanding the critical roles of fluids and magmas in mass transfer, we warmly invite you to submit an abstract to our AGU 2026 session:
V021 – State-of-the-Arc: Questions and Progress about the Subduction Zone Factory https://agu.confex.com/agu/agu26/prelim.cgi/Session/280119
Session Description:
The subduction of oceanic lithosphere into Earth's interior is a fundamental process that drives some of the planet's most significant natural hazards, including large earthquakes, explosive volcanism, tsunamis, and long-term climate variability. Despite major advances, key questions remain regarding the physical and chemical processes that govern subduction zone dynamics. Outstanding questions include, but are not limited to:
the role of fluid-rock interactions in generating slab and plate-interface seismicity;
the mechanisms and pathways of mass and volatile transfer from the subducting slab to the mantle wedge, and their links to arc magmatism;
the controls on the spatial and temporal evolution of plate coupling and thermal structure along the subduction interface; and
the ultimate fate of subducted slabs and their volatile cargo in the deep mantle.
This session welcomes contributions spanning geophysics, geodynamics, petrology, geochemistry, and experimental and numerical modeling to advance our understanding of subduction zones. Interdisciplinary studies are highly encouraged.
