All,

I am sad to report that Emeritus Professor of Geology Dr. Davis A. Young passed away yesterday here in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  Professionally, Dr. Young was a long-time professor here at Calvin University, accomplished igneous petrologist, and award-winning historian of geology.

Dr. Young was educated at Princeton University (BSE, 1962), Penn State University (MS, 1965), and Brown University (Ph.D.,1969).  His teaching career included positions at New York University (1968-1973), the University of North Carolina at Wilmington (1973-1978), and Calvin College (now University) starting in1978 and retiring in 2004.

His research and publications (including 10 books) focused on his interests in the history of igneous petrology and the relationship between geology and the Christian faith.  He was the 2009 recipient of the Mary C. Rabbit History of Geology Award.

He was also an avid birder with a life list of over 1000 species.
