Hello PIGs:
My eighth article is posted under the Essays on the Study of Pegmatites heading on PIG. The article is:
Jahns, R.H. and Tuttle, O.F. (1963) Layered pegmatite-aplite intrusives. Mineralogical Society of America Special Paper, 1, 78-92.
The MSA has granted permission to post the article along with the essay. Though not nearly as well known as some of Jahns’ other publications, this one was hugely important for its presentation of what became known as the Jahns-Burnham model for pegmatites and the experimental evidence for it. The only new data in the paper are five analyses of pegmatites, and these are given only in a summary form without explanation of methods or other details. The remainder of the article consists of Jahns’ elucidation of his model. O.F. “Frank” Tuttle was an experimental petrologist; one might expect the article to feature experimental work done by him. The answer is, yes, and no. Read the article, find the short passage that refers to the “model of Jahns and Burnham (1963)”, and the very brief discussion of experimental evidence for it. A colleague who reviewed the essay remarked that “Science articles are not mystery stories with a whodunit revealed at the end.” This article, however, comes as close to a whodunit mystery as any I have ever known in a science publication. In the essay, I have solved the mystery to the best of my knowledge.
