Dear Colleagues,
You are cordially invited to register to attend the Workshop on Remote Sensing and Critical Mineral Discovery on September 29, 2026 in Salt Lake City, UT. This workshop is being conducted in coordination with NASA, the USGS, the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Environmental Protection Agency and the University of Utah, and will take place at the University of Utah on the day preceding the Society of Economic Geologists (SEG) national meeting.

The primary goal of this workshop is to engage mining corporations and the academic research community to help build a robust workforce skilled in applying remote sensing data to domestic critical mineral discovery. The workshop is designed for a target audience of 100 participants, including industry professionals, academic researchers and early-career geoscientists (including graduate students and postdoctoral researchers). Stipends are available to help support early career researchers to attend.

The workshop is funded by the National Science Foundation Geoscience Directorate (NSF/GEO 2626251) and hosted at the University of Utah Critical Mineral Institute and held at:
University of Utah, Cleone Peterson Eccles Alumni House
155 S. Central Campus Drive, Salt Lake City, UT 84112

Workshop Highlights:

  • Enhance Spectral Data Proficiency: Learn about various spectral data types, industrial applications, and how to identify remote sensing datasets relevant to critical mineral identification.
  • Hands-on Training: Gain practical experience accessing and utilizing data through NASA's Earthdata (https://www.earthdata.nasa.gov/)  and the JPL GEMx portals https://popo.jpl.nasa.gov/mmgis-aviris/?mission=GEMx)
  • Data Integration & Processing: Explore perspectives on integrating spectral data with other vital geoscience resources—such as airborne geophysics, geologic mapping, and geochemical databases.
  • Real-World Applications: Examine case studies demonstrating the successful application of spectral data in mineral resource exploration.
  • Partnership & Funding Opportunities: Foster strategic collaborations between academia, industry, and government entities, and learn about available funding mechanisms for collaborative research, including future fiscal year 2027 investments.
