15 Doctoral Positions Available – German Cluster of Excellence "The Ocean Floor – Earth's Uncharted Interface"

Dear colleagues,
I hope this message finds you well.
I would like to bring to your attention an exciting opportunity for
early-career researchers:
Up to *15 positions as Research Associates (Doctoral Candidates) (f/m/d)
*are now open within the *Cluster of Excellence "The Ocean Floor –
Earth's Uncharted Interface".

Key Details:

  • Start Date: January 1, 2026, or later
  • Duration: Fixed term of 4 years, ending no later than December 31,
    2029
  • Employment Level: 75% of the regular weekly working hours
  • Salary: According to German pay scale E13 TV-L/TVöD, depending on
    the employing institution
  • Application deadline: 25th of July 2025

This interdisciplinary Cluster is a collaboration between the
Universities of Bremen and Oldenburg and five partner institutions,
including the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and
Marine Research, Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology, Leibniz
Centre for Tropical Marine Research, Constructor University, and
Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg – Institute for Advanced Study.

Funded by the German Excellence Strategy, the Cluster investigates
processes at the ocean floor and their impact on the Earth system. The
research portfolio includes:

  •     Particle transport to the ocean floor in a changing climate
  •     Carbon and element fluxes between seabed and seawater
  •     Ecosystem responses to environmental change on the ocean floor
  •     Climate archive-based scenarios for a warming planet

For members of the mineralogy community, the following positions may
be of particular interest:

*    EXC1-09 Metal-microbe interactions in hydrothermal plumes
    EXC1-10 Deconstructing Arctic hydrothermal systems
    EXC1-11 Nanoscale Interactions of Vent-Derived Particles
    EXC1-12 Deep-sea natural petroleum seeps and hydrothermal*
