Hello all,
Sorry to bother but can anyone on this list direct me to a vendor who sells accurate wooden models of the 32 crystal classes?
I did a simple search online but have not had any luck so far.
For use in a mineralogy class.
Thanks

Hi Frank:
I suggest to use 3D printer to make your own.
Best wishes!

Hi Folks,
We’ve used wood crystal models for years from the Krantz collection.
Listing of different sets of wood models is at:
https://www.mineralogy.eu/models/Krantz/wooden-models.html
They also list glass and cardboard versions.
Images of the blocks:
https://www.mineralogy.eu/models/unsigned_wood01.html
These tend to be expensive, and I’m not sure about current availability. But this was the source of our wood block crystal symmetry collections.
Hope this helps,

Dear Frank,
The last time I bought wooden models was from Krantz.
https://www.krantz-online.de/en/teaching-material/crystal-lattices-and-models/
They were lovely but it was only a subset of the range of possible crystal
forms.
My most recent solution to my mineralogy teaching needs was to purchase a
3D printer and a copy of SHAPE by Eric Dowty.
https://www.shapesoftware.com/00_Website_Homepage/
Using SHAPE you can draw any crystal model you want on the computer, and
print several copies for your class on the 3D printer.
This has solved my crystal model needs for mineralogy classes for the
foreseeable future!
Cheers,

Plastic models work well too.

At Princeton, we have hundreds of these wooden models (do you recall?).
Some of them are various old sets (now partial) from the Krantz
company. Some others were apparently hand carved by Professor Phillips
a century of so ago. We even still have a few of the old cigar boxes
the students were given (see attached).
We could share some of these models, but it might take a little time as
they are not particularly well organized right now.

Hi All
Another thing that you might do it to introduce your students to Smorf https://www.smorf.nl/index.php
This website allows students to build their own crystal models and experiment with how forms interact and how they change with symmetry changes. Our students get an unknown sample to ID and write about and I encourage them to model the euhedral samples with Smorf to create a figure for explaining forms in their samples.

I don't know whether this was stated already....
Krantz in Germany still sells them:
