[Apologies for cross-posting]

Dear metamorphic enthusiasts and metamorphic-adjacent colleagues,

With the inaugural award presented in 2020, the Barrow Award is given annually by the Metamorphic Studies Group (MSG) of the Geological Society of London to a scientist who has made an outstanding contribution to the field of metamorphic geology and petrology, relative to career length at the time of nomination.

MSG is now accepting nominations for the 2025 Barrow Award!

The award is open to a scientist at any stage of their career. In addition to our 2024 winner Prof. Pierre Lanari (University of Lausanne), previous winners are Prof. Frank Spear (2023), Prof. Katy Evans (2022), Prof. Roger Powell (2021), and Prof. Clare Warren (2020).

For 2025, we are particularly interested in soliciting nominations for later career and established researchers (more than 20 years post-PhD). Nominees will have, relative to their career stage, fundamentally shaped metamorphic research, performed substantial service to the community, and/or have been exemplary in their mentorship of new generations of students and researchers.

The award is open to individuals to apply directly, or for persons to nominate an individual. We are committed to achieving equality of opportunity for all applicants/nominees and we encourage applications from a diverse range of individuals. Nominees do not need to be a member of the Mineralogical Society. Career breaks and other extenuating circumstances will be considered.

The particulars of the nomination procedure can be found here: https://metamorphicstudiesgroup.wordpress.com/barrow-award/. Please note that to simplify the approach and ensure equity between different forms of contributions, the nomination process has changed significantly this year. The nomination package will consist of a completed form that speaks to the criteria of leadership and excellence detailed at the link above,  and the nominee’s CV.

Nominations for the 2025 medal should submitted by the 31st October 2024. The nominations will be considered by the MSG Committee and judging completed by a diverse set of independent researchers within the community.

The winner will be invited to give the keynote presentation at the 2025 MSG Research in Progress (RiP) Meeting. This will be held in Liverpool (UK), with dates and further details soon to be announced.

Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any additional questions about the award, the nomination procedure, or the judging procedure. Please also get in touch if you plan to compile a nomination package for a colleague.

All the best,
Freya (on behalf of the MSG Committee)
