To all,
With sadness, I want to make sure that the community has been informed of the passing of Cornell University Professor Emeritus William A. Bassett at the age of 94 on January 25, 2026 in Ithaca NY surrounded by his family. Bill, a MSA Roebling medal winner, was a giant in the mineralogy world for his many contributions with the diamond anvil cell, the application of Synchrotron radiation to mineralogical research and other notable contributions. He will also be long remembered for his contributions to the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Cornell and by the many students who had the great privilege of learning and applying mineralogy under his guidance. I was humbled and honored to follow him in teaching the mineralogy course at Cornell, which was greatly enhanced by his guidance and contributions. He left a legacy that made the course a memorable experience for all. Bill was both an incredible scientists and a caring and wonderful human being.
More information about Bill and his life can be found in his obituary at the web site of the Bangs Funeral Home (https://www.bangsfuneralhome.com/obituaries/william-bassett) (funeral was February 12, 2026).
