An NSF-funded (DUE) workshop on teaching petrology will be held at Smith
College in Northampton, MA on 2-5 August, 2023. Recent developments in
online resources for teaching petrology offer new paths to enhance and
perhaps accelerate petrology learning. COVID-driven remote teaching has
given many professors an unplanned push into teaching with online
materials, and many have worked to make some of their own course materials
available on the internet. What did we and can we learn from our
internet-based remote teaching experiences? How might we best integrate
the use of online resources with traditional, in-class and field-based
instruction?
This workshop is intended to bring together a modest group of petrology
teachers with a wide range of experiences and teaching needs to share their
knowledge and aspirations. Through presentations and discussions, we will
attempt to identify and create new ways to use online resources to improve
student learning in our classes. In particular, small (3-5) groups of
participants will design and write student assignments that use online
resources to work with and help teach specific concepts. The extensive,
interactive igneous and metamorphic petrology website written and coded by
co-PI Brady will serve both as an example and as a vehicle for implementing
the new activities and for making them generally available. Participants
will agree to use and evaluate one or more of the new activities in their
classes in the academic year following the workshop. Expenses for travel
(reasonable airfare) and lodging (two people per room) will be reimbursed
for all attendees.
If you teach an intermediate level course in petrology, or an earth
materials course that includes petrology, and would like to participate in
this workshop, fill out this application
