We would like to draw your attention to an upcoming topical session at the annual GSA Meeting in Pittsburgh: T109: Advances in Detrital Heavy Minerals: Applications and Methods
Conveners:
Emily Finzel, University of Iowa
Sarah George, University of Oklahoma
Megan Mueller, University of Texas at Austin
Shay Ridl, University of Iowa
Rational for the session:
Research over the past 50 years provides a foundation for understanding the role of detrital heavy mineral analysis in solving geologic problems. These developments have paved the way for the next phase of study which starts with the integration of bulk modal analysis, detrital geo- and thermochronology, and detrital single grain geochemistry on a range of detrital phases to address remaining questions in a more nuanced way. The next stage of innovations is centered on technological and statistical advancements related to rapid and efficient acquisition of single grain information. Several new data sets and innovative ideas from ongoing studies globally are helping to refine our understanding of how these data can be used to better understand Earth system processes. This proposed forum will foster the exchange and integration of these emerging data sets and ideas and promote future collaboration across subdisciplines to address ongoing questions on the development of detrital heavy mineral studies.
Description:
Detrital heavy minerals are used to investigate a variety of fundamental Earth system processes. We welcome submissions that highlight advances in the acquisition and analysis of detrital modal counts and single grain isotopic and geochemical data to solve a variety of problems.
Invited Speakers:
David Chew: Trinity College Dublin
Katie Maneiro: Wheaton College
Abstract Submission Information:
The abstracts submission form will be “live” on 1 May, and can be found at https://community.geosociety.org/gsa2023/home. The abstracts deadline is 11:59 p.m., Pacific Time, 25 July 2023.
We hope to see you all in Pittsburgh!
