Hello everyone (and apologies for cross-posting),

I would be grateful if you could pass on the following PhD opportunity at the University of Montpellier (France) to your Master students:

Within the framework of the Critical Metals in Orogens project funded by the French Research Agency (https://anr-cmio.gm.umontpellier.fr/), we are seeking an outstanding PhD candidate to work on the role of metamorphism and tectonic processes in concentrating/remobilizing critical metals in the Earth's crust, from geodynamic to mineral scale. The work will focus on orogenic domains that contain historical or active Lead and Zinc mining districts, which may contain critical metals such as indium (In), gallium (Ga) and germanium (Ge). Two metallogenic districts and their geodynamic context will be studied in particular: the Iberian pyrite belt in Portugal and the Caledonides orogen in Norway.

The single studentship will be awarded competitively. There are two possible projects to choose from:

1 | Determination of the tectono-metamorphic and geodynamic framework of the targeted mineralization. The student will work on the characterization of Pressure-Temperature-deformation-fluid-age conditions of the targeted mineralization’s host rocks and on lithospheric thermo-mechanical numerical modeling.

2 | Metallogenic and geochemical study of critical metals (Ge, Ga, In) in the Pb-Zn mineralization targeted in order to understand the relationship between metallogeny, metamorphism and deformation at deposit and mineral-scale.

Profile and skills required
The candidate must hold a Master's degree in Geosciences with research experience in orogenic systems (tectonics and metamorphic petrology) or metallogeny (mineralogy, geochemistry, economic geology). The student should have solid skills in fieldwork (sampling, petrology, mineralogy, structural geology) and/or structural geology and/or petrology, mineralogy and/or geochemistry and/or geochronology and/or metallogeny applied to deep crustal domains and/or mineralizations. Knowledge of analytical methods for silicate rocks and/or ores (optical petrography, electron microprobe, LA-ICP-MS, EBSD) is essential for this subject. Experience or a strong interest in thermo-mechanical numerical modeling is desirable.

Application deadline: 25th of August 2025. Interviews will take place via zoom early September.

Expected start date: 1st of November 2025

Please send any enquiries to benedicte.cenki@umontpellier.fr mailto:benedicte.cenki@umontpellier.fr

Application shall be sent in one single pdf to benedicte.cenki@umontpellier.fr mailto:benedicte.cenki@umontpellier.fr and must contain:

  • a cover letter highlighting the candidate’s motivation and suitability to project 1 or 2,

  • a short CV

  • Bachelor’s and Master’s full university records, marks and rankings,

  • the name and contact details of two referees.

With best regards,

Bénédicte
